Footnote

A journal for artistic exchange.

Footnote is an independent print journal exploring creative response and exchange. Each issue begins with a commissioned central text, from which a diverse group of artists, photographers and writers are invited to respond. The result is a layered, collaborative body of work that moves between disciplines, perspectives and interpretations. Alex Hunting Studio leads the concept, design, art direction and production of the publication. The editorial structure is deliberately open, allowing contributors to engage with the text in their own way, whether through image, fiction, essay or abstraction. This creates a rhythm across the magazine that is varied but cohesive, with each contribution forming part of a wider conversation.

Footnote

A journal for artistic exchange.

Footnote is an independent print journal exploring creative response and exchange. Each issue begins with a central text, from which a diverse group of artists, photographers and writers are invited to respond. The result is a layered, collaborative body of work that moves between disciplines, perspectives and interpretations.

Alex Hunting Studio leads the concept, design and art direction of the publication. The editorial structure is deliberately open, allowing contributors to engage with the text in their own way, whether through image, fiction, essay or abstraction. This creates a rhythm across the magazine that is varied but cohesive, with each contribution forming part of a wider conversation.

The design is shaped by the visual language of footnotes themselves, drawing on their symbols, structures and conventions. A more technical tone runs through the magazine, with markers, references and typographic elements abstracted and reworked into layered compositions. This creates a system that is both functional and expressive, capable of carrying a wide range of content while maintaining a distinct and recognisable identity. Pacing plays a key role, with denser, more complex moments offset by quieter sections. Physically, Footnote is produced as a large-format object, with an emphasis on paper, scale and detail. The publication is designed to be held, kept and revisited, reinforcing its role as a considered alternative to more disposable forms of publishing.
